HIV certificate now mandatory for Islamic marriages

By Abdul Fatahou Laye

NAKURU: Nakuru Kadhi Sheikh Khamis Mshal Khamis said it is now mandatory for couples intending to marry to produce their latest HIV report signed by a recognized doctor for them to obtain their marriage certificate.

“Researchers must not despair in search of the cure for AIDS as Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) in one of the hadiths says ‘every disease that Allah brings in this world has its medicine’,” said the Kadhi. Sheikh Khamis further urged participants to go back to the Qur’an since it’s the guide that Allah has given to its beloved Umma and Muslims should live without fear.

Khamis spoke during an event organized by KMYA to involve Muslims in build up activities for the World Aids Day scheduled for December 1st. The activities were held at Swabah Madrassa and brought together both young and old.

Mahfudh Athman, who has been living positively for the last 17 years, narrated how it was difficult for him to work with the stigma that was attached to HIV during the time that he was infected. “Because of the stigma, most Muslims hide their HIV status and end up infecting innocent young girls and women in their marriages,” said Mahfudh. “To end the stigma, more information is needed for our Muslims brothers and sisters and those living positively should also come out,” he said.

NACC South Rift coordinator Kibe Ranji acknowledged that the Bible and the Qur’an preach faithfulness in marriage. “But it’s because of our ego that people move out of their houses and get infected,” said he. Ranji thanked KMYA for organizing the event and asked Muslims CBOs and FBOs to apply for TOWA funds that would be advertised soon.
